What You’ll Need:
- Neutral-colored roller shades
- Sharp scissors
- Rolling pin
- Foam paint brush
- Latex primer
- Assorted patterned magazine clippings or paper scraps
- Decoupage medium
What to Do:
1. Prime the fabric of the roller shades if needed.
2. Apply decoupage medium over the primer with the use of your foam paint brush.
3. Working in small areas at a time, place patterned magazine clippings, paper scraps, fabric or other artistic pieces onto the wet area of the shade. When using fabric, be sure to leave an inch or so extra around the perimeter to wrap around and glue to the backside.
4. With a rolling pin, flatten out the chosen material and let all the air bubbles escape.
5. Apply the decoupage medium as a top coat to fasten and protect the material. Allow the canvas to dry out completely.
6. Once the front is dry, flip your roller shade over and work on gluing the border you created to the backside.
7. If you'd like to use a uniform trim, you can apply to right over the the pieces you just glued.
8. Once both sides are completely dry, I'd suggest leaving it to set out overnight, install your newly decorated window shades by using the specific instructions that came with them.
You will find that different pieces of fabric or paper reflect all sorts of colors into your room giving it a vibrant feel. If you'd like to limit the colors or match your decor better, choose scraps within the same color family. That way, all the different patterns will cast different shadows but in all the same color. This would be great to use in a bathroom window, a child's bedroom or even in the kitchen.
